What is Zi Wei Dou Shu astrology? How does it work?

Zi Wei Dou Shu is an ancient Chinese divination method that uses the lunar year, month, day, and hour of birth to construct an individual’s natal chart, thereby revealing auspicious and inauspicious events.

Unlike Western astrology, no ephemeris is consulted when constructing a natal chart. The chart is divided into twelve palaces, with the celestial stems and branches serving as the grid. Celestial bodies—including the stars at the zenith, the stars of the Northern Dipper, the stars of the Southern Dipper, and the divine and malevolent stars—are arranged within this framework. The position of the Purple Star is first determined through the Five Elements of the Birth Palace. The locations of the remaining thirteen stars—including the Central, Southern, and Northern Dipper constellations—are then arranged relative to the Purple Star. Including the Purple Star itself, there are fourteen principal stars. As the Purple Star holds primacy, this system is known as “Zi Wei Dou Shu.”
